    Event Date : January 28, 2017 to January 28, 2017
Address:      Location: Overtown Performing Arts Center

Miami, FL, January 31, 2017: Historic Overtown’s newest facility played host to the 1st Annual Smart n’ Up Black Male Youth Summit this past Saturday, January 28, 2017.  The event was coordinated by the local nonprofit Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.).

Three special guest speakers engaged with the teens through interactive demonstrations ranging from proper decision making, commitment, and conflict resolution.  Deric Muhammad from Houston Texas used a befitting analogy about using their minds to make decisions versus using a gun.

The Draco fires 10 rounds in 4 seconds. The AK-47 fires 10 rounds per second. The AR-15 - fires 25 rounds every 2.5 seconds. The Glock fires 18 rounds per second. But YOUR MIND produces thought that travels 24 billion miles per second. Choose your weapon!”

Silky Slim from Baton Rouge, Louisiana shared his personal testimony of life in prison, bad choices, and his life transformation.  The most poignant moment was when he opened his accordion folder to reveal his criminal rap sheet which adorned the floor similar to that of a scroll.  He advised the youth that “there is nothing glamorous about bodies, prison life and how many of the rap artists that they admire don’t do half of the things that they promote, it’s a business not a lifestyle”.  Mr. AV who is also from Louisiana used spoken word to engage and promote a stop the killing message in a call and response demonstration.

Students, Parents, and their mentors enjoyed complimentary Continental Breakfast and Lunch with drinks donated by Alo Juice and Top Pop.  Each student received a Smart n’ Up gift bag containing a notebook and pen which they used to participate in creating a road map for their life.  Rapper Jim Jones made a surprise pop up telling the young men how he wished he had something like this growing up and how they should focus less on being famous and put more focus on representing a famous person by becoming a lawyer or an accountant.

Smart n’ Up was a free event and made possible through the financial support of Headliner Market Group, House of Wings, Miami Fingalicking Restaurant, and Bob Metelus Studio.
